March 5, 1917 — I shall not be stampeded into war, nor will I keep step with the drum beats of Wall Street.

A lawyer in Quincy, Illinois, named John Wall speaks for many as he denounces what he fears is a rush to war, backed by the “favored class.” In his inaugural address in Washington that same day, Woodrow Wilson declares, “We are provincials no longer.”

The illustration is from the cover of a radical magazine called “The Masses.”
